Saint Stepanos Monastery

Pilgrimage to religious places is another unique attraction of Iran, along with natural and historical attractions. The presence of many historical churches and monasteries is proof of the hospitality and peaceful presence of religious minorities in this country.

This monument is located in East Azerbaijan province, 150 kilometers from Tabriz city, 3 kilometers from the south bank of Aras River in an area called Sham Valley. This church was built in the 9th century, the whole area of the church is located in the heart of the mountains and among the green nature of the border region of Jolfa city and the Republic of Azerbaijan.

This historical building was registered in the list of national monuments of Iran because of its antiquity, historical, religious history and its unique architectural style. It was also registered in the UNESCO world heritage in 2006 along with other churches in Azerbaijan province.
