Kandovan Village

Kandovan or Gündoğan is an extraordinary ancient village in the province of East Azerbaijan situated in the foothills of Mount Sahand, 60 kilometer from Tabriz. With it’s at least 800 years existence, this remarkable place is inhabited by 670 people and offers beauty landscape for its travelers .The village exemplifies manmade cliff dwellings which are still inhabited. The cavernous homes are excavated inside volcanic rocks.

According to geology findings, Kandavan village with 7000 years of history is one of the most famous and amazing natural attractions of East Azerbaijan province. What constitutes the identity of the village is the presence of households and residential houses inside the pyramidal and conical masses of rock. The people of this village have prepared for themselves, in addition to residential houses, barns, warehouses and workshops inside the rock formations.
